Muddy Waters

I’m drowning in muddy waters

But I don’t want to take you with me

My voice box is sewn and stitched

I can’t find the sounds to scream

I can feel the water past my knees

I don’t want to take you with me

I was afraid for you to come here

But somehow you found a path and came through

I thought that you deserved better

Although I never loved anyone the way I love you

You are waiting for me

But I feel the water past my waist

And I don’t want to take you with me

The waters raise higher

But I don’t know how to swim

You stir quietly

And I feel sad that I put us in this situation

Because I feel the water past my chest

And I don’t want to take you with me

I warned you not to choose me

But you said I was the one

You had visions of the waters rising

But you still refused to run

Now you can’t leave

You’re waiting patiently for me

But I feel the water past my neck

And I’m afraid I’ll take you with me

Slaughtering Common Sense

Before reading what I have to say, please follow the link (click on title of this post) I've provided...

Ok, assuming you've read it by now, now you will understand when I say WTF? The statement by the Cargill representative said,

"We believe the reason for the animals balking, or not moving forward, was that there were too many people present during the audit, distracting the animals," he said. Klein said there were two or three additional government people and three or four additional Cargill employees on hand."

The statement almost made me go cross-eyed! The truth is that the animals balked and didn't move forward because they knew they were being led to their deaths. Anyone with a functioning brain would understand that. Having said that, I realize that there are still some people who make believe that animals (besides their pets) are stupid and don't mind being abused, raped, and slaughtered. Humans in power always find a way to justify cruelty to those they have power over - whether it is non-humans or people with a different race, gender or sexual orientation. They like to make believe the others are below them, and their pain is either non-existent or it does not matter.

The slaughterhouse industry is not humane. The purpose of a slaughterhouse is to kill. If your job is to kill others, you have to repress a part of your humanity. You leave your compassion at the door so that you can torture and kill another being. Slaughterhouse workers often become abusers at home (you read about this in a book called Slaughterhouse). Although some people who kill do it with compassion, such as a veterinarian who euthanizes an animal who is in a lot of pain and dying, these are not the kind of people who are in these slaughterhouses. Even the "humanely raised" animals go to the same places the factory farmed animals go to get killed.

Unnatural Foods

Although I have been trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle, I find that it is very difficult in a world that tries to alter nature. Besides staying away from animal products, refined grains, soda, high fructose corn syrup, as well as parabens in beauty products, I abstained from eating seedless fruits. I figured they were hybrids because plants must have seeds to reproduce. However, I never thought much about vegetables like carrots, beets, corn, potatoes, beans, rice, and wheat as being hybrids. I knew that some of the items I just named were likely to be genetically engineered if they were not organic, but you can buy organic versions of each of these foods.

I learned that these are foods that will not grow naturally without human intervention. I briefly learned about this last year during my fast - at least about carrots. I also remember reading books by Dr. Laila Afrika such as Nutricide and Afrikan Holistic Health. The words were seeds planted in my mind. The seeds started to grow as I watched a presentation on YouTube by Dr. Sebi. Dr. Sebi discussed hybrid foods as well as many other topics. After watching his presentation I thought about the foods I eat and realized quite a few of the foods I consume are hybrids - corn, carrots, beans, wheat, rice, cashews, and walnuts. I thought if those are all unnatural, what will I eat? Of course there are alternatives, but either they can be difficult to find or I just don't eat them often.

I believe that nature provides all we need. Human beings try to break everything down to protein, carbohydrates, fats, calories, etc. The life force contained in a piece of food can not be duplicated in a laboratory. I also don't believe that humans need to cross breed or alter the genes of plants to make them better. They were created perfectly. Now people are pushing to grow "meat" in a laboratory. Who knows the effect this unnatural "food" will have on human bodies? I don't think it is an animal-friendly solution. Most people crave authenticity, and it may push a lot of people to have more of the real thing. There are people looking for grass-fed cows now. The majority of cows are fed grain, and even though people eat them anyway, folks say that naturally fed cows taste better. To me, there is a big difference between fresh squeezed juice and store bought juice the taste and the life force is just not there, so I wouldn't be tempted to consume laboratory grown food.

Antepartum Depression

I've noticed that while you can find information on postpartum depression, almost no one talks about antepartum depression so I am including this link: http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/depressionduringpregnancy.html

Drugged

As I read the health section in the news, I see the same stuff over and over - another ground-breaking study on drugs, vaccines, etc. done on animals. I don't know about you, but when I see that a test has been done on an animal, and I don't conclude that it will work the same way on human beings. I do, however, see the cruelty and lack of respect for the lives of other species. I don't care that it's "science"; it's speciesism. With their actions, scientists are saying that the lives of animals are expendable especially if experimenting on them could possibly help human beings. It is the same mentality that allowed experimentation on black people in America. It was wrong then, and it is wrong now. The best cure for anything is prevention. Instead of figuring out what causes certain diseases, and trying to eliminate the problem at its root, we are busy trying to find a "cure" - a bandage to put on the problem.

I find it amazing that there seems to be a drug for almost anything. Have you ever seen those drug commercials for people with high cholesterol - you know, the one that blocks the cholesterol from food? This is the same commercial where the so-called patient has said he has tried "diet" and exercise. I'm thinking that if he ate foods that didn't contain cholesterol, then he would have no need to take a drug that blocks cholesterol from foods from entering his system. Doesn't it just make sense? Their idea of diet is probably having a diet coke with their grilled chicken.

Now, I am seeing in the news that drugs that were thought of as safe are proving not to be safe, and there is a great debate over vaccinations as well. I think humans are far too dependent on drugs. It seems to me that we've lost touch with ourselves. When we are sleepy, we consume caffeine. When we are in pain, we take drugs. When we can not deal with our emotions or problems, we take drugs. We even think sleep and pain are our enemies. Sleep is necessary, and pain is a message. Pain usually occurs when something is wrong. It is a call to pay attention to our bodies, and pain doesn't disappear because it is suppressed.

Don't get me wrong. Sometimes medication is necessary when there is no other alternative. I remember a time when I was in the hospital and in a lot pain. At the time, morphine was my savior. The nurse at the hospital gave it to me when she realized how much pain I was feeling. I've never had it again, but at that time it helped a lot. I just think people should not abuse drugs. Drugs that seem harmless can still be abused. If you have an addictive personality or you're looking for an escape, and that drugs makes you feel good, you may have trouble stopping the use of the drug.

I understand the desire to feel good, to escape, to take ones mind off of stressful thoughts, but sometimes we look for an artificial solution for our problems and the problems don't go away because we haven't solved them.

Question of Health

As a parent-to-be, I am more concerned than ever about what goes into my body as well as the environment. Of course, I am also concerned about what can enter my child's body. I have been noticing all the news about vaccinations - parents who blame vaccinations of their children's autism, and cities/countries that are attempting to send parents to jail for refusing to have their children vaccinated. Has anyone thought about why parents might refuse vaccinations for their children? Besides religious reasons, does anyone ever think a parent may be concerned that vaccinations may not be safe? Why wouldn't a parent be concerned about mercury-filled injections that contain diseases and possibly animal secretions? The thought of vaccine ingredients is sickening to me. Rarely do doctors explain to parents what is in the vaccines or the possible side effects. Parents are mostly frightened and shamed into vaccinating their children, and popular media portrays parents who don't vaccinate their children as irresponsible.

What happens if you vaccinate your child and it harms your child? What if you were against it in the first place, but you were faced with jail time if you did not comply? Can something be done to reverse the effects? Will anyone even acknowledge that a vaccine was at fault? As a new parent, I have to ask these questions. I think it is important to question everything.

As a pregnant woman, I often hear that I should consume dairy. Of course, since I am a vegan, animal secretions do not touch my lips. Calcium is a mineral that comes from the earth. Why would I wait for an animal to consume it, get pregnant, give birth, and produce milk only for people to take away the cow's calf, to steal its milk. I could just eat some greens or broccoli! People who know nutrition know that milk is only one source of calcium and that it is food for babies not adults. I find it peculiar that advocates for breastfeeding, who understand that human milk is best for human babies, would tell an adult human to drink milk from an animal. If my baby doesn't need it, why would I?

It can be difficult to step away from mainstream thinking and question what most people consider healthy. It's not popular, and people may ridicule you, but I believe it is our responsibility to take care our own bodies.

Expectations in a Community

I was pondering on something this morning as I reflected on past and current experiences with people who make a living doing what they love - specifically in the "alternative" medicine field. Because people who have interest in holistic living; i.e. yoga, veg*nism, meditation tend to see each other often, we have a bit of a community. You run into the same people at the health food store, at classes, lectures, etc. You tend to form relationships with one another, so when you become a patron of their business, things can become complicated. Say you are a regular customer at a store in the community. You have been a customer for years, and you try to buy items from there rather than anywhere else so you can support them. However, because you've been there for so long, they tend to take you for granted. They may start catering to newer customers and even forget you are there. You may even be expected to service yourself. You get tired of it. Besides that, you've been waiting for months to get a product you need. You eventually decide to buy it elsewhere. Someone from the store sees you with it, asked you where you got, and gets an attitude because you didn't buy it from them. That person took your action personally.

I used the store as an example, but I have seen it a lot in health care practitioners who expect patients to see them on a regular basis - sometimes weekly when the patient will have to pay a lot of money out of pocket each time, plus take time off of work to do so. That wouldn't be as bad if the treatment were working. However, I have seen a doctor become upset because the patient couldn't afford to keep coming back when the treatment wasn't working. It was taken as a personal slight.

I have experienced this many times. I have supported people who were so concerned with their own livelihood that they don't consider that you may not be able to afford their services or that you have time constraints. You may be expected to hang around for a long time while you wait for service - whether it is a class, an appointment, or something else while you are concerned about getting to work or getting home.

What I've learned is that no matter what standing a person has in a community, s/he is still human. Human beings get self-absorbed, take others for granted, and expect more from others because of what they feel they contribute. They gossip, say inappropriate things, and make false assumptions. They may be older but not necessarily wiser. They may be smart, but not always make intelligent choices. Sometimes we can not always give people the kind of support they want, and they may develop ill feelings towards us. No one owes us anything, and no one should make us feel obligated to do anything for them especially if we are not treated well.
